Nick Russell from Church Army, is a linguistics graduate from Cambridge who became involved in youth work after coming into contact, with young people from a traveller community in his thirties. He saw the potential in them and wanted to make a difference. After completing a Psychology degree, Nick joined Church Army in 1999 and moved to South London. Here, he met Helen, his wife, who was a volunteer with Church Army and together, they have been working with the community in Eltham, Middle Park and Brooke Estates for about 18 years.
Nick and the Church Army team work tirelessly with vulnerable young people, the poor, those trapped by addiction and lack of education and ex-offenders by building friendships and offering practical help. Much of their outreach is done through various groups like Coffee Stop/Friendship Church, Superkidz, 5-11 clubs, Youth Clubs, XLP Partnership Detached Work and Superkidz Mentoring Programme.
Both Nick and Helen have a servant’s heart and reach out to one of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the whole country. They show what it means to bring Jesus’ love to broken lives and break the cycle of damaged children becoming damaging parents. Nick and Helen live in Eltham with their children Isabelle 11 and Samuel 8.
